Newt Gingrich is a horrible piece of shit on a personal level, but pump your brakes for a minute.
Like every other bowl of spaghetti the GOP has thrown against the wall this primary season, Newt touts his credentials as a small-government conservative who wants to cut spending and basically once again breathe life into Alan Greenspan’s mouldering cadaver. Gingrich, especially, claims credit for 1994’s “small-government” backlash against Clinton, which maybe is a cipher for his current successes.
But here’s the thing: For the 20 years he represented Cobb County, Georgia, he was the biggest food stamp recipient, welfare queen, moocher, leecher, whatever you want to call it, in the country. The NYTimes reported on this in 1994 but narrative and image always trump history and facts so what are you gonna do:
A 1993 study in Common Cause Magazine found that Cobb took in $3.4 billion in Federal money in 1992. Only two suburban counties in the nation, Arlington, Va., outside Washington, and Brevard County, Fla., home of the Kennedy Space Center, took in more.
So, let’s say Newt takes first place in this clown car derby. By his own admission, he wants to make this election a debate about “ideas,” his big selling point being that he could out-debate Obama and that would win the country to his side. Why not take him up on it, and blow a hole in the GOP’s philosophy?
If the Left were serious about anything other than calling people names and basking in the warmth of the Tribe, they should see this as an opportunity to make this election a referendum on some terrible, horrible, no-good very bad ideas that have somehow remained “conventional wisdom” for a few decades now.
Or we can just sit back and enjoy the next episode of America’s Next Top President.
