Ron Paul represents the failure of anti-war activism, and this is why Our Tribe reflexively hates him. His (relatively) dovish stance is rooted in his rigid adherence to a kind of agrarian, anti-industrial libertarianism, but he’s still the only one carrying the standard of the anti-war movement.
Paul being the country’s loudest voice for pacifism forces us to confront the fact that, despite the anti-war mandate he was given in 2008, Obama has essentially rebranded and amplified the War on Terror at home and abroad.
Those in this country who hope for any kind of peace movement are left with a man who is obsessed with the crank economic theories of Ludwig von Mises, is scandalously anti-choice, and is the political patron saint of privileged white men who ignore inequality and injustice under the banner of leave-me-alone libertarianism.
It is an ugly reflection of the left’s failures.
